Effects of turbidity on survival, osmoregulation and gill Na+-K+ ATPase in juvenile shrimp Penaeus japonicus

چکیده
Penaeus japonicus juveniles were exposed for 3 wk to different turbidities of suspended sediments: control [2 + 2 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU)], medium turbidity (35 f 15 NTU) and high turbidity (65 f 15 NTU). The mortality rate increased after exposure to high turbidity Exposed late luveniles became less tolerant to changes in ambient salinity and showed hlgher mortalities at low salinity. The effect on osmoregulatory capacity of shrimps was examined by determining the osmotic gradient between the haemolymph and the external medium in concentrated seawater (42 9& S) and in dilute seawater (15 O/m S). In young juveniles, osmoregulatory capaclty was generally not affected by turbidity. In late juveniles, it was sign~ficantly reduced by turbidity. Reduced osmoregulatory capacity resulted from impaired regulation of Na' and Clconcentrations. Gill Na+-K' ATPase activity of exposed late juveniles increased with turb~dity, apparently as a compensating reaction to the disruption of osmotic and ionic balance.

Branchial chamber structure and osmoregulatory function in the prawn, Palaemon elegans (Crustacea: Decapoda) from the Caspian Sea
The structure, ultrastructure and osmoregulatory function of the branchial chamber were investigated in Palaemon elegans (Rathke, 1837) by light microscope, electron microscope and immunohistochemistry methods, respectively. Each chamber possesses a branchiostegite, 3 epipodites and 8 phyllobranchiate gills. The lamellae are attached along the two outer surfaces of the triangular gill axis. Ult...

Aspects of osmoregulation including salinity tolerance, osmoregulatory capacity, location of transporting epithelia, and the expression of the enzyme Na+/K+-ATPase were investigated in the developing brown shrimp, Crangon crangon (L.), from the North Sea. Early developmental stages and large juveniles were exposed to a wide range of salinities for measurement of hemolymph osmolality and surviva...

Eurihaline fish support waters with different salt concentration. However, numerous studies have shown that salinity can affect fish development. Thus, the effect of salinity change from 20 to 5 and 35 on survival, weight, length, gill chloride cell ultrastructure and gill Na+, K+ ATPase activity was evaluated in Centropomus parallelus following short-term (6, 24 and 96 hours) and long-term exp...

The decapod crustacean Penaeus monodon survives large fluctuations in salinity through osmoregulation in which Na+/K(+)-ATPase (NKA) activity in the gills plays a central role. Adult P. monodon specimens were gradually acclimatized to 5, 25 and 35 per thousand salinities and maintained for 20 days to observe long-term alterations in NKA expression. Specific NKA activity assayed in gill tissues ...
